Teams of elementary, middle and high school students in Ohio will compete against each other in activities related to engineering and science during the 21st Young Astronaut Day at NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland on Saturday, Nov. 2.
Astronaut Stephanie D. Wilson, currently serving as chief of Glenn’s Program/Project Integration Office, will welcome the students. A veteran of three space shuttle flights, Wilson will be followed by organizers of the event who will provide guidelines and a summary of the day’s activities.
The event will take place in Glenn’s hangar from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and conclude with an awards ceremony, recognizing the teams’ participation.
New activities this year include an Asteroid Capture using Lego robots to capture a ball and Space Laser using small mirrors to show how space communication works.
Working with volunteers from Canstruction, the students will build a structure out of canned foods resembling the Voyager spacecraft. The cans comprising the finished structure will then be donated to the Cleveland Foodbank.
This year’s event is sponsored by Glenn’s Exploration Systems Project Office, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Northern Ohio Section and the three partnering companies of Glenn’s Test Facilities, Operations, Maintenance and Engineering contract.
Media representatives interested in covering this event should call the Media Relations Office at 216-433-2901 by 2 p.m. Nov. 1, in order to be cleared through security.
