Evan Bell of Crestview, Florida, works every day with the technology that one day will enable the launch of NASA’s Space Launch System rocket, taking astronauts on missions into deep space.

Serving as an aerospace technologist in Kennedy’s Engineering Directorate, Bell is conducting some of the design engineering for the umbilical systems that will support the SLS rocket as it stands on the launch pad and then lifts off. He also is working on engineering elements of the recovery trainer for SpaceX’s Crew dragon spacecraft.

Bell’s work extends beyond NASA projects to working closely with students taking part in robotic competitions. Bell is the lead mechanical engineering mentor for the Pink Team, an organization taking part in the FIRST robotics competition.

He also interned with Kennedy’s Swamp Works laboratory that develops cutting-edge technology in robotics and other fields. He leads several KSC KickStart efforts as well.

Bell began working at Kennedy in 2015. He earned a master’s in mechanical engineering from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 2016.
