STENNIS SPACE CENTER CELEBRATES ANNIVERSARY HANCOCK COUNTY, Miss. – NASA Stennis Space Center’s (SSC) visitor center, StenniSphere, will celebrate the 35th anniversary of Apollo 11, the first human lunar landing, with events throughout the summer. On Tuesday, July 20, the anniversary date of Astronaut Neil Armstrong’s first step onto the Moon, the following special events are scheduled:

• Apollo exhibit: Recalls Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s historic mission. Visitors can see a Moon rock, Apollo spacesuits and other displays honoring the Apollo program and its achievements.

• 10 a.m.: The planting of a “Moon Tree” descended from seeds carried to the Moon and back by Apollo 14 Astronaut Stuart Roosa, a longtime Mississippi Gulf Coast resident.

• 11 a.m.: The premiere of a live stage production, “The Eagle has Landed.” Members of the WINGS children’s performing arts division of the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center in Gulfport, Miss., will perform at 11 a.m. each weekday through Aug. 3.

StenniSphere is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Labor Day Weekend. Winter hours are Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. StenniSphere is closed all major holidays. Free tours begin at the Launch Pad, I-10, Exit 2, and include a view of the stands where rocket engines were tested for the Apollo Moon missions.
