A Defining Image

A space shuttle external fuel tank arrives by barge, following transport from NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility, at NASA Stennis on March 8, 1981. Once installed on the B-2 side of the Thad Cochran Stand at NASA Stennis, the 154-foot tank was filled with liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen to validate its thermal protection system was properly bonded to the aluminum skin.
