Project: Advanced Control Technology for Integrated Vehicles (ACTIVE)
NASA’s F-15B #837 research aircraft flew over the desert near Boron, CA, as it headed back to NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center following an ACTIVE research flight. A recent flight research project at Dryden, ACTIVE employed thrust-vectoring of engine exhaust and an advanced control system to develop technology to improve cruise and maneuvering capabilities of future aircraft at subsonic and supersonic speeds.
The ACTIVE F-15B (Serial #71-0290) incorporated engine exhaust nozzles developed by Pratt and Whitney which could vector up to 20 degrees in pitch and yaw, along with close-coupled canards ahead of the wings, to improve performance and maneuvering ability.Oct 1996NASA Photo / Jim Ross› F-15 ACTIVE Project Description
