The prototype space shuttle orbiter Enterprise mounted on its strong back transporter frame arrives at the back ramp of NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards, Calif., after an overland trip from its final assembly plant at Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, Calif., on Jan. 31, 1977. The 36-mile journey through the streets of Lancaster and Edwards roadways at a tow speed of only 3 to 5 mph took more than 10 hours.1977
