Stennis focused on testing every space shuttle main engine used in flight during the 1980s. As an indication of the level of activity underway, the site conducted the 1,000th hot fire of a space shuttle main engine in 1988. The center also led in testing that helped return the space shuttle to flight following the Challenger accident.
