This illustration shows a high-altitude balloon ascending into the upper atmosphere.

Launching from Antarctica, ASTHROS (short for Astrophysics Stratospheric Telescope for High Spectral Resolution Observations at Submillimeter-wavelengths) will use a balloon larger than a football field to study a phenomenon that chokes off star formation in some galaxies.
