About

NASA Days is a four-step Minority University Research and Education Project (MUREP) activity designed to give students attending Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) an overview of NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement (OSTEM) internship program, NASA Pathways Intern Employment Program (IEP), and NASA Fellows activities.

Session one will walk through the applications process for NASA’s OSTEM internships and the Pathways IEP. Session two will be an overview of the NASA organizations that are represented by the subject matter experts (SMEs) supporting the event. Session three will be informational and allow opportunities to practice interview skills, as well provide resume/application reviews designed to give the student a chance to answer difficult questions, develop interview strategies, and improve their communication skills. Finally, session four will be a Technical Exchange Meeting held at the hosting institution and will provide an opportunity for NASA SMEs to collaborate with universities’ researchers, professors, and scientists. The technical meeting allows the university an opportunity to discuss their capability statements, new technologies, best practices, and research challenges.

NASA Days is open to educators and higher education students majoring in engineering, life and physical sciences, mathematics, computer science, business, law, and journalism. High school students must be 16 years of age at the time of application.

Objectives

To increase opportunity awareness amongst students, faculty, and administrators at MSIs
To provide students unique insight into opportunities and the application process
To provide students with access to NASA managers for informal mentoring and networking
To increase interest amongst MSI students and faculty in NASA and educational opportunities
To encourage students from underserved and underrepresented communities to apply for internships and other educational opportunities
To increase the diversity of the intern applicant pools

Expected Outcomes

Students, faculty, and administrators will be more informed about opportunities at NASA
Students, faculty, and administrators will expand their academic and professional networks
Students will be better prepared to apply for and participate in future opportunities
Future applicant pools will include more students from the visited institutions, potentially resulting in increased diversity within the applicant pools and future cohorts of competitively selected participants

NASA Gives a Boost to Minority Serving Institution Innovators

Groundbreaking new ideas can come from anywhere, but some ideas face a tougher path to implementation than others. NASA has awarded a total of nearly $600,000 to 10 minority-serving institutions (MSIs) across the U.S. to amplify the voices of diverse innovators and help their ideas find a way into NASA’s programs.
