Satellite lidar in oceanographic research
Speaker: Michael Behrenfeld
Affiliation: Department of Botany and Plant Pathology, Oregon State University
Abstract:
Satellite ocean color measurements have revolutionized our understanding of global ocean ecosystems. However, the passive ocean color approach has inherent limitations regarding observing conditions for valid retrievals, atmospheric corrections, interpretation of the retrieved ocean signal, and information content on plankton vertical structure. Active lidar measurements can address these issues and provide an observational complement to the passive ocean color record. While airborne lidar systems have been used for decades to probe marine ecosystems, only recently have lidar measurements of the ocean been made from space. This presentation will begin with a brief overview of the lidar approach and path to ocean lidar measurements from space. Attention will then be given to unique insights on ocean ecology that have already been accomplished with these new global data. The presentation will conclude with thoughts on future potentials for an ocean-optimized satellite lidar mission.

Current and Future Earth Science Project Office (ESPO) Supported Missions
Speaker: Erin Czech
Affiliation: Earth Science Project Office, NASA Ames Research Center
Abstract:
The Earth Science Project Office (ESPO) at NASA Ames Research Center is a group of success-oriented individuals providing project management for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, Earth Science Division. We provide planning, implementation, and post-mission support for large, complex, multi-agency, domestic and international field campaigns. ESPO has led over 60 successful field campaigns, dating back to 1987. ESPO supports several of NASA’s Earth Science Division’s programs, including Upper Atmosphere Research, Tropospheric Chemistry, Radiation Sciences, Weather and Atmospheric Dynamics, Ocean Biology and Biochemistry, Airborne Science, and the Earth System Science Pathfinder Program.
