What does the U.S. Navy, astronomy and eggs have in common?

They are all topics of events at the NASA Wallops Flight Facility Visitor Center March 17 through 19.

The excitement starts on Thursday, March 17, with an opening ceremony and presentation for the new exhibit “Stewards of the Sea: Defending Freedom, Protecting the Environment”, followed by the final installment of the “Astronomy and Night Sky Winter Series” on March 18, and finishing out the week with our newest event “Save the Eggs: A Space-themed Egg Hunt and Egg Engineering Challenges” on March 19.

The “Stewards of the Sea: Defending Freedom, Protecting the Environment” exhibit opening will begin at 5 p.m. and feature an environmental stewardship presentation at 5:30 p.m. with Joe Atangan, a science advisor from U.S. Fleet Forces Command.

During the astronomy event from 7 to 10 p.m., participants will have the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities that include an Astronomy 101 presentation, astronomy-themed movies, and hands-on activities and crafts. The Delmarva Space Sciences Foundation will be on-site to provide expertise and high-powered telescope views of objects in the winter night sky.
Finally, it’s that time of year so something has to be done with eggs.

At the Save the Eggs event from 1 to 4 p.m., participants will have the opportunity to collect eggs and prizes during a space-themed egg hunt, find a “ticket to launch” an Eggscaliber model rocket, create an eggstronaut for an egg drop challenge, as well as participate in several space-themed egg activities including an egg rocket race, catapult, toss and relay.

The NASA Visitor Center, located on Va. Rt. 175 about six miles from U. S. Route 13 and five miles from Chincoteague, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
