Jeffrey “Jeff” Seaton is NASA’s Chief Information Officer. Seaton was named CIO in January 2021. Prior to his appointment as NASA’s CIO, Seaton served as acting CIO since May 2020 and as deputy CIO before that. Seaton supported the leadership and integration of NASA corporate and mission critical IT functions and capabilities and oversaw NASA’s annual information technology (IT) spending of more than $2 billion. He collaboratively provided oversight for agencywide, mission-enabling functions related to IT investments, modernization efforts, cybersecurity, and the delivery of enterprisewide IT and information solutions.
From 2011 to 2018, Seaton served as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) at NASA’s Langley Research Center. During that time, he led transformative change efforts in both the Langley and CIO enterprise across the agency to increase effectiveness and accountability of the services provided by the organization.
Prior to the CIO role, Seaton served as the Chief Technology Officer at Langley Research Center, responsible for planning and coordinating center investments in high value technologies for future NASA missions. He has also held various technical leadership positions since joining NASA in 1991 as an electrical engineer conducting robotics research.
Seaton is a 2014 recipient of NASA’s Outstanding Leadership Medal. In June 2008, he was selected to participate in NASA’s Senior Executive Service Career Development Program. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Virginia Tech in electrical engineering.
