“The magic happens when I find ways to use technology to help achieve NASA’s mission of exploring the unknown in air and space, innovating for the benefit of humanity, and inspiring the world through discovery.”

As information technology mission impact lead in the Strategic Integration and Management Division within NASA’s Space Operations Mission Directorate, Anastasiya Plachta is responsible for understanding directorate goals to ensure technology enables an easier work environment in achieving the agency’s mission.

Plachta communicates with other programs within the directorate to understand what technology is needed to ensure seamless connectivity and functionality. She recently worked with the International Space Station Program and its application development team to ensure continuous operations, collaboration, and maintenance for the agency’s new Spot the Station mobile application, a tool providing additional capabilities and information to enhance the station sighting experience for the public.

An augmented reality interface makes it easier for users to locate the station and provides options for capturing and sharing pictures and videos of their sightings in real-time. The app’s built-in compass will show you where the space station is – even if you’re on the other side of the globe.

“Technology is critical in our everyday work, as it is everywhere,” said Plachta. “I’m always excited to learn from my colleagues and other programs about their initiatives and look forward to matching the right technology to accomplish mission needs.”

Plachta recently toured the Earth Information Center at NASA Headquarters a new, hybrid tool that will provide data to the public to help adapt and respond to our changing planet. The interactive experience provided Plachta with a different perspective on our changing environment and how critical the utilization of technology is in our everyday tasks, something she hopes will translate in her day-to-day work at NASA.

“I gained a different perspective on how Earth is changing in areas that affect livelihoods, and the importance of utilizing technology for the benefit of people and the environment,” said Plachta.

A native of Novosibirsk, Siberia, Plachta graduated from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia with a bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, and consulting with an international emphasis. During her time there, Plachta traveled to South-East Asia, where she met her now husband. In her spare time, Plachta enjoys painting, planting, spending time with her husband and two children, and Japanese cuisine.

NASA’s Space Operations Mission Directorate maintains a continuous human presence in space for the benefit of people on Earth. The programs within the directorate are the heart of NASA’s space exploration efforts, enabling Artemis, commercial space, science, and other agency missions through communication, launch services, research capabilities, and crew support.
