- IceBridge: The DMS/POS, a digital mapping system, was operated on eleven science missions over Antarctica, on the P-3B flying from Argentina.
- Global Hawk: The AV-6 TM-Demo deployment to Hawaii was successfully completed. TM-Demo was a DOD mission.
- Jhony Zavaleta (Project Manager) and Vidal Salazar (Deputy Project Manager) are conducting site survey for the NASA CAMP2EX (Cloud, Aerosol and Monsoon Processes Philippines Experiment) field campaign with visit to Okinawa, Japan, and Manila, Philippines from Nov. 26-Dec. 16, 2017. Besides the Earth Science Project Office (ESPO) managing the project, the Ames Solar Spectra Flux Radiometer (SSFR, instrument PI Warren Gore) will be part of the instrument payload on the NASA P-3B aircraft. CAMP2EX will address key questions regarding the interactions among clouds, aerosols, and meteorology, as driven by solar radiation and radiation emitted from the Earth’s surface. The field campaign will take place in the vicinity of the Philippines and will focus on the influences of aerosol particles from biomass burning and anthropogenic particle emissions. Primary observations will include cloud properties, aerosol particle properties, meteorological parameters, as well as solar radiation and radiation emitted from the Earth’s surface. The campaign will take place during the period from July to early September 2018 to investigate the impact of biomass burning and pollution aerosol particles during the Southwest Monsoon.
- Robert Dahlgren and Sean Lam are testing a trio of UAS in the Icing Research Tunnel at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland this week. Testing under Arctic conditions is being performed on the Navmar ArcticShark, Griffon SeaHunter, and U. Colorado DataHawk aircraft, and an icing sensor made by Pemdas. This project will improve closure of the LEWICE software package that simulates 2D and 3D ice accretion on aircraft, and validate LEWICE for low speed and low Reynolds number regimes typically experienced by small UAS in Arctic and other icing environments. The ArcticShark wing mounted in the IRT test chamber surrounded by (L to R) Brett Bormann (Navmar), Sean Lam, Bob Dahlgren, Chris Porter (GRC), and Carl Calianno (Navmar).
