The Center of Rocket Launch Operations Focus of NASA Presentation March 8

The Range Control Center, the heart of conducting rocket launch operations from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility, will be the subject of a presentation at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, March 8, at the facility’s Visitor Center.

Bruce Scott, a former NASA project manager, will talk about the many aspects of the Range Control Center as the focal point for all launch operations at the Wallops Flight Facility. Scott will include a history of Control Center operations from the early days beginning in 1945 through the present.

The Range Control Center presentation is the second in the Sounding Rocket Lecture Series. “Part 3 – Launching from Wallops Island” will be held Thursday, April 12.

If you missed the first presentation in the series, “Life Cycle of a Sounding Rocket,” it is available at https://youtu.be/WnZWS9TTouM. Eric Roper, a mission manager with Orbital ATK supporting the NASA sounding rocket program, discussed the mission life cycle of a sounding rocket from inception through launch and data retrieval.

The NASA Visitor Center, located on Va. Rt. 175 about six miles from U. S. Route 13 and five miles from Chincoteague, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
