Signing Ceremony for Louisiana’s National Center for Advanced Manufacturing Set June 16

NASA, Louisiana Economic Development (LED) and university leaders will celebrate the renewal of their partnership in the National Center for Advanced Manufacturing with a signing ceremony at 10 a.m. June 16, at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans, 601 Loyola Ave.

NCAM, originally formed in 1999, is a partnership among NASA, the State of Louisiana, the University of New Orleans and Louisiana State University, which leads the center on behalf of the partnership. NCAM is located at NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, where NCAM’s tools and techniques are among those being used to build the core stage of NASA’s Space Launch System — the most powerful rocket in history — and the Orion spacecraft that will carry astronauts on deep space missions and to Mars. Through NCAM, NASA is expanding its efforts to engage industry and academia on advanced manufacturing topics central to the nation’s space mission, with a particular focus on technologies that reduce the weight of materials during space flight.

Patrick Scheuermann, director of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, which manages Michoud for the agency; Edward James, LED director of Business Development; Dr. Richard Koubek, dean of the Louisiana State University College of Engineering; and Dr. Emir Macari, dean of the University of New Orleans College of Engineering, will be available to media.

At noon, Scheuermann will be keynote speaker for the New Orleans Chamber of Commerce’s Second Quarter Business Luncheon at the Hyatt Regency. He will talk about the future of America’s space program, progress on the SLS, the critical work being accomplished at Michoud, NCAM and the enduring partnership between NASA and New Orleans, and its impact on the economy.

Media interested in attending the NCAM ceremony and/or Scheuermann’s speech to the New Orleans Chamber should contact NASA Public Affairs Officer Shannon Ridinger at 256-541-7698 no later than 5 p.m. Monday, June 15.
