NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland recently announced awards  to 14 after-school programs in Ohio to implement a new engineering design challenge, Spacecraft Safety, during the 2019-2020 academic year.

As NASA celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo missions, we are taking the next step in human exploration of our solar system with the Artemis program. Through Artemis, the agency will establish a sustainable presence on the Moon and begin to prepare for the next giant leap — sending astronauts to Mars.

The Spacecraft Safety design challenge guides sixth through ninth graders through the engineering design process to design and build a model of a spacecraft that can carry astronauts and safely land them.

“Glenn Research Center is committed to working with local organizations to offer dynamic, high quality experiences that will excite our next generation of STEM workers,” said Robert La Salvia, chief of the center’s Office of Education. “Congratulations to all Award Recipients.”

The awardees receive:

  • A challenge related to current Glenn research.
  • Supporting science investigations that go deeper into the content and align directly with the Next Generation Science Standards.
  • Live virtual connections to NASA subject matter experts where participants can discuss their challenge solutions and the experts’ work at NASA.
  • Opportunities for student teams to submit their challenge solutions to the NASA Glenn Office of Education in the form of a slide presentation or video presentation.
  • Virtual and in-person professional development for facilitators to learn how to conduct the challenges in their own settings.

Award Recipients from Ohio are:

  • Advanced Methods in Innovation, Youngstown
  • Buckeye Local Schools – Buckeye Intermediate School, Medina
  • Camp Fire Northwest Ohio, Findlay
  • Challenger Learning Center of Lake Erie West, Oregon
  • Cleveland Metropolitan School District – Warner Girls’ Leadership Academy, Cleveland
