NASA’s Glenn Research Center is hosting the eighth annual International Space Apps Challenge, Friday through Sunday, Oct. 18 – 20. See the Space Apps Challenge website for a schedule and other details.

During a 48-hour sprint, participants innovate solutions to challenges that NASA proposes, creating games, smartphone and computer apps, videos, teaching tools and more.

The challenges change each year within the theme of Earth and space. This year, the categories are:

  • Earth’s Oceans
  • Our Moon
  • Planets Near and Far
  • To the Stars
  • Living in Our World

NASA astronaut and retired U.S. Army Colonel Doug Wheelock will deliver the keynote address on Artemis, NASA’s lunar exploration program, at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18.

A mini-hackathon for kindergarten through 12th-grade students, with little to no experience, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 9 to 5:30 p.m.  During the student hackathon, kids will participate in STEM-based challenges.

Space Apps Challenge is a NASA-led initiative managed by the Earth Science Division of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate.
