Media Access, Parking, Opening Ceremony Info for NASA Langley’s Open House

HAMPTON, Virginia – Center access and special parking have been arranged for credentialed news media attending the 100th Anniversary Open House at NASA’s Langley Research Center on Oct. 21.

To access the center, news media should drive directly to the front or back gate and present their media credentials to security, at which point they’ll receive directions and a dashboard placard allowing entrance to the parking area.

From this parking lot, media can either walk the facility, or take buses that will connect them with the 16 tour stops (tour map: https://oh.larc.nasa.gov/oh/). Driving on center is only allowed for safety and security personnel. The buses will be directly across the street from the designated parking lot.

News media are not required to be escorted while on center. However, we encourage you to contact a public affairs officer once you arrive as we can help point you toward areas of interest, facilitate access into labs and other tour locations, or possibly assist with other kinds of on-center transportation issues.

For PAO support please contact Mike Finneran at 757-374-3596.

The open house will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. At 10 a.m., a 30-minute kickoff ceremony will include remarks by Langley’s director, David Bowles; astronaut Kathryn Hire; the director of NASA Wallops Flight Facility, Bill Wrobel; Hampton’s vice mayor Linda Curtis; and U.S. congressmen Scott Taylor and Bobby Scott. The Joint Base Langley-Eustis Honor Guard will present the colors, and the Grafton Marching Band will play the national anthem.

To attend the opening ceremony media are encouraged to arrive no later than 9:30 a.m. The ceremony is being held next to building 1222 at the intersection of Langley Blvd. and W. Taylor St.

News media who either aren’t credentialed, or choose to park off center, will have to enter Langley on shuttle buses, or park and walk from nearby off-site locations, and must go through a security scan.

Open house highlights

The facility today known as NASA’s Langley Research Center was founded July 17, 1917. It is the agency’s first field center, and the nation’s first civilian aeronautical laboratory.

Open house visitors will see where the pioneers of the golden age of aviation forged revolutionary ideas and America’s original astronauts began their training. They will also learn how Langley’s current research contributes to NASA’s journey to Mars, helps usher in a more mobile future and strengthens our understanding of Earth’s climate.

The open house will also feature an astronaut talk and a hands-on “Kids Zone” for young explorers. Admission is free and tour buses, food vendors, restrooms, and gift shopping will be available.
