With more than 600 works of art on display, NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility Visitor Center will hold the opening reception and awards presentation for its Apollo 50th Anniversary Youth Art Contest from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, July 18.
This contest aims to inspire art through the celebration of Apollo as we push towards returning to the Moon and on to Mars. It is designed to encourage students to use the elements of art to help them understand and explore the role of the Apollo missions in NASA’s advancements in human space exploration.
“The response from students for the art contest was overwhelming. Works of art from students across the country have been submitted and I think visitors will be highly impressed with their representations of this historic period in the nation’s space program,” said Kim Check, Wallops Visitor Center director.
NASA imagery of Earth’s Moon, past and current lunar missions and all aspects of Apollo missions were the inspiration as students made the connection between science, history and art.
The entries were judged by an esteemed panel of judges in four age group categories. The first, second and third place winners of each age category, People’s Choice, NASA’s Choice and the Grand Prize winner will receive prizes and award ribbons.
The “Apollo 50th Anniversary Youth Art Exhibition” will be on display at the Visitor Center from Thursday, July 18, through Saturday, September 7, 2019.
The NASA Visitor Center, located on Va. Rt. 175 about six miles from U. S. Route 13 and five miles from Chincoteague, is open daily in July and August from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
