The NASA Wallops Flight Facility Visitor Center invites the public to attend the opening reception for the 70th Anniversary Youth Art Contest June 26.
Over 300 youth artists from 12 states submitted artwork that was inspired by NASA imagery taken from space.
The opening reception will be held at the Visitor Center from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 26, and the artwork will remain on display at the Visitor Center through Sept. 5.
Kim Check, Visitor Center manager, said, “The contest was developed to allow students to showcase their artistic talents in how they interpret NASA imagery. I think those attending will be impressed with the talents of those who have submitted artwork.”
The People’s Choice Award will be voted on by visitors during the opening reception.
Judging will be conducted by representatives from the Chincoteague Cultural Alliance, Salisbury University’s Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art, and the Chincoteague Island Theater Company immediately following the opening reception.
Winners will be announced and presented with prizes at the Visitor Center at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 27. The prizes include art supplies and an “Art Flight” – artwork flown on NASA’s C-130 aircraft.
Jeremy Eggers, Wallops Office of Communications associate chief, said, “The art contest is a great way to begin the Wallops 70th Anniversary weekend, which includes the public open house of the facility from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., June 27. We hope our visitors receive an appreciation of the world around us and the research conducted at Wallops through the weekend events.”
The NASA Visitor Center, located on Va. Rt. 175 about six miles from U.S. Route 13 and five miles from Chincoteague, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
