Dr. Merbold is SL-1 payload specialist representing the European Space Agency (ESA). Dr. Merbold, from Max-Planck Institute in Stuttgart, is a specialist in crystal lattice defects and low-temperature physics. The photograph was taken by Otis Imboden.
