Students Learn How STEM is Used in the Workplace

NASA Glenn Research Center has partnered with EHOVE (Erie, Huron, Ottawa, Vocational Education) Career Center to provide students with real life work experiences outside the classroom. The goal is to help students identify their aptitude and passion for working in the aerospace industry and to help them realize that STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) knowledge will be important throughout their work lives.

Recently, some of the EHOVE students visited NASA Glenn and got a tutorial in welding techniques from Senior Welder and Engineering Technician Tom Dixon. Each one got a turn trying out pulsed gas metal arc welding on mild steel.

Eventually the students will do some of the welding and electronic installation for a Glenn project to build a solar array trailer to provide remote and emergency electrical power. This partnership supports a 3kWe mobile photovoltaic-based power system, which could support power needs both in space and on the ground. The partnership with EHOVE will help students interested in pursuing careers in electrical technologies with a focus on energy generation and conversion.
