The unusual design of the Proteus high-altitude aircraft, incorporating a gull-wing shape for its main wing and a long, slender forward canard, is clearly visible in this view of the aircraft in flight over the Mojave Desert in California. Designed by Scaled Composites, LLC, of Mojave, CA, Proteus was an “optionally piloted” aircraft ordinarily flown by two pilots in a pressurized cabin. However, it also had the capability to perform its missions semi-autonomously or flown remotely from the ground.July 26, 1999NASA Photo / Patrick Wright› Proteus Project Description
