Application Procedures for Astronaut Candidate Program

NASA astronauts are selected in groups on an as-needed basis.  In recent years, this has meant the agency accepted applications approximately every four years. The most recent call for applications was April 2024.

During application periods, the process to apply may vary slightly depending on your background:

Civilian Applicants
Civilians must submit their applications through the Office of Personnel Management’s USAJOBs website, http://www.usajobs.gov.

Active Duty Military Applicants
Active duty military personnel must submit applications through the Office of Personnel Management’s USAJOBs website http://www.usajobs.gov and notify their respective military service. Active duty military applicants must also follow the requested procedures of their military service. Please contact your military service for additional application procedures.

Applicants with Flight Experience
Applicants who wish to be considered for a position as an astronaut pilot, or are able to demonstrate any flight experience, should download and complete the JSC Form 603 – Summary of Aeronautical Experience, and submit the form with other required documents through the Office of Personnel Management’s USAJOBS Web site http://www.usajobs.gov.
