My name is Adnerys Burgos López and I’m studying here at the Interamerican University, and I’m in my fourth year.
Which StoryMap topic are you presenting on?
I’m going to be talking about spatial water quality; specifically the definition of it, the comparison between the temperatures in Culebra and La Parguera, and a little bit about why we use those sensors and what they measure.
What have been some highlights of the OCEANOS program?
I was a little bit skeptical about coming here because I would prefer just working to make money since I’m a university student. But the whole experience has been really great – I had the opportunity to make new friends outside of my family, and I worked with a lot of professionals that have opened doors for new opportunities.
Another highlight I would say was actually getting to know more about Culebra because I’ve never been there before. I live here in Puerto Rico, so I don’t know why I haven’t thought of going to the island, even though it’s part of us. So it’s very important that the high schoolers go there and learn more about something that is part of our history and us as Americans.
Did anything surprise you in this program?
Oh, yeah, planting corals. It was a highlight for me and something that I will take with me forever because I’ve never done that before. I never even thought about corals before and their importance, because I didn’t know they work as a barrier for when the hurricanes come. So that is something that I’m going to take with me forever, and it makes me care more about the ocean. I was oblivious about the ocean, to be honest, because I was just thought the earth is full of water and we don’t have to care as much, but we do.
How does this internship fit into either what you’re already studying or what you’re hoping to do next?
I’m studying biology and I wasn’t sure what I’m going to study next, but now I’m hoping to do a master’s degree in something related to the ocean thanks to this internship.
What are you going to be taking with you from OCEANOS?
I think I’m going to be taking with me the whole experience. and I think I’m going to be taking with me the experience working with SAM (Sociedad Ambiente Marino) because I’m going to be contacting Sami (Sulemani, Director of SAM). He told me that if I needed anything, that he could help me move along within oceanography. I want to keep up that relationship and be able to hopefully work with him moving forward, and even NASA in some other future.

¿Qué tema de StoryMap presentará?
Voy a estar hablando de calidad de agua espacial y voy a estar hablando de los sensores, de la definición de calidad per se y por último, de la comparación entre las temperaturas de Culebra e La Parguera.
¿Cuáles han sido algunos aspectos destacados del programa OCEANOS?
Alguno de los highlights puede ser la experiencia per se de estar trabajando mano a mano con los profesores, los estudiantes de High School, que nunca se me iba a pasar por la mente este y nada con mis compañeros. Ha sido un trabajar en grupo siempre va a ser algo un poco difícil, pero nunca imposible.
¿Hubo algo sorprendente para ti en este programa?
Lo de plantar corales eso es lo que fue bien inesperado. Pues andaba yo tampoco senador, pero cuando fuimos a plantar corales pues se me quitó el miedo y aprendí a nadar en menos de tres segundos. No sé cómo. Cuando nos pusieron a plantar los corales, primero tuvimos que amarrar los corales hace en una cuerda, una barra como de PVC que estaba dividido, si no me equivoco 50 y 50 como si fuera un papel cuadriculado. Y cuando lo amarramos lo sumergimos a una profundidad como de 30 pies, con barras de cemento para que se anclar en.
¿Cómo encaja esta pasantía en lo que ya estás estudiando o en lo que esperas hacer a continuación?
Pues como había mencionado anteriormente, estoy estudiando biología y si deseo mantenerme en la carrera de ciencia y hacer una maestría en algo relacionado. Y con optimismo trabajar con SAM o hasta con la NASA.
¿Qué te vas a llevar de OCEANOS?
La experiencia de haber trabajado y haber conocido muchos profesionales.
