The thrust of America’s early space efforts was to land men on the Moon and return them safely to Earth. During the Apollo program, 12 men explored the Moon and returned over 800 pounds of lunar material to the Earth. Humans also took their first look at the far side of the Moon, which always faces away from the Earth.
