Four student teams competed to pitch the next Martian rover LEGO prototype at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in California. Students built, designed and tested their rovers through two different challenges to impress a panel of judges.

The center welcomed 41 students from around the country to participate in a four-day workshop focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The workshop was coordinated by the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars, or NCAS program through the center’s Office of STEM Engagement.

Each student had to complete a five-week interactive online course focused on various aspects of Mars and NASA’s exploration of the Red Planet. Once the students arrived, they were separated in teams: Red, Green, Gold and Blue and mentored by NASA engineers. Each team tested their rover and prepared a marketing package to “sell” their design to NASA.
