Record breaker at Wallops! The Vanilla Aircraft VA001 unmanned aerial system (UAS) set a record this week after landing at Wallops on Monday, Oct. 23. The long-duration UAS took off from the Wallops runway on Oct. 18 and flew for 121 hours and 24 minutes. Vanilla Aircraft reports that the flight was the longest for a fuel-powered, unmanned aircraft. The aircraft, which has a 36-foot wingspan, carried multiple payloads including a NASA-furnished multispectral imager. Development of the aircraft was supported through NASA’s Small Business Innovative Research program. The flight was conducted over the north end of Wallops Island and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport’s UAS runway on the north-end of the Island was on stand-by as an emergency landing location.
