Space Math III — Problem 15, Data Corruption by High-Energy Particles

Back to search page
Flaring, active regions of our sun are highlighted in this image combining observations from NASA's NuSTAR. During the observations, microflares went off, which are smaller versions of the larger flares that also erupt from the sun surface.

Students see how solar flares can corrupt satellite data. They create a timeline for a spectacular episode of data loss recorded by the SOHO satellite using images obtained by the satellite. Students also calculate the speed of the event as particles are ejected from the sun and streak toward Earth. A one-page teacher guide accompanies the one-page assignment.
