Personal Biography

Dr. Ramakrisna Nemani is a retired NASA scientist with over thirty-five years of experience in theory and application in optical remote sensing, numerical bio-geochemical modeling, and climatology. His research in ecological forecasting and collaborative Earth sciences focused on integrating satellite data into simulation models for understanding and predicting the state and function of terrestrial ecosystems.

His experience includes serving on the science teams for three NASA missions including EOS (Earth Observing System), LDCM (Landsat Data Continuity), and NPP (NPOES Preparatory Project).

During his active career, he published over 200 papers on various topics including ecosystem modeling, climatology, remote sensing, and machine learning, with over 50K citations. He received several awards from NASA including the Outstanding Leadership Medal, Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal, and four group achievement awards.

He received NASA’s highest honor in 2021, the Distinguished Service Medal, “for his visionary leadership using global satellite observations to understand critical ecosystem processes vital to NASA’s advancement of science and human welfare”.

He currently works at the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute, a research partner to NASA at the Ames Research Center in the Silicon Valley, mentoring a new generation of earth scientists.
