Chief, Program Business Office

Brian D. Smith is the chief of the Program Business Office in the Launch Services Program (LSP) at NASA’s John F. Kennedy Space Center in Florida. He provides program-level management for LSP by planning and executing the support requirements and flight projects for Science Mission Directorate mission customer requirements.

In this role, Smith manages acquisition and management of all program-related services, program-level financial management, and the integration and insight of launch services projects across multiple NASA centers, along with managing, administering, and supervising all program resource requirements.

Smith’s office manages the launch services awarded under the NLS-II (NASA Launch Services-II) contract for the Power and Propulsion Element and HALO (habitation and logistics outpost) – both foundational elements for Gateway and Artemis missions. He also supports the Gateway Logistics Services contract awarded to provide logistics element services to the Gateway.

Experience

Smith began his career at Kennedy Space Center in 2003 in the Office of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO). From 2006 to 2010, he was the lead program analyst in the CFO Launch Services Resource Management Office. In this role, Smith led the Mission Spacecraft Acquisition Branch supporting LSP. He was responsible for all fiscal resources and day-to-day operations and activities within the branch.

Education

Smith attended Youngstown State University in Ohio, and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration, management and operations.

Awards

He is the recipient of several awards and recognition, including a Group Achievement Award for Gateway Logistics Services Source Evaluation Board in 2021, a Group Achievement Award for Gateway Formulation Team in 2019, an Equal Employment Opportunity Medal in 2018, and a NASA Exceptional Service Medal in 2010.

Personal

Smith considers Youngstown to be his hometown. He resides in Titusville with his wife, Sabrina, and their three children, Omar, Jalen, and Aaron.

Smith’s hobbies include fishing, golfing, cooking, and investing.
