Three additional payloads similar to the one shown here will be selected by NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate to fly as secondary payloads on the first flight of the Space Launch System. They will be determined through NASA’s Cube Quest Challenge — designed to foster innovations in small spacecraft propulsion and communications techniques. CubeSat builders will vie for a launch opportunity through a competition that has four rounds, referred to as ground tournaments, leading to the selection in 2017 of three payloads to fly on the first flight of NASA’s Space Launch System.
