My name is Layshaliz Rodríguez Mulero. I went to Colegio Discípulos de Cristo de Texas and I’m currently in my first year here at Interamerican University doing a bachelors in Biomedics.
Which StoryMap topic are you presenting on?
My topic is quality of water. We’re studying how it affects marine life and how important it is in the world and in the sea. I did all the graphs in Excel. It was torture. I actually did them eight times. But that’s basically my part: I did the graphs and I’m going to be explaining all of them.
What have been some highlights of the OCEANOS program?
My favorite part of all the internship was the restoration of corals in Culebra with the SAM organization. They’re doing that and seeing how they grow and persevere. I don’t know, it was just awesome. And also snorkeling, I’ve never snorkeled before.
Did anything surprise you in this program?
The damage that we’re doing to our oceans: they’re responsible for almost all the air that we breathe. I love how they are teaching us how to restore, how to help the ocean, everything.
How does this internship fit into either what you’re already studying or what you’re hoping to do next?
Well, at first I honestly, I thought that it didn’t help at all, but it does. I have to do these classes, these courses of biology and also labs and other courses like microbiology. This internship is going to help me remember because I can look back and say, ‘Oh, I saw that, I was there. I know what they’re talking about because I saw that back at Culebra or back at La Parguera.’ So definitely it’s going to help me in my future, and if I do other internships. This internship is going to open so many more doors for all of us.
What are you going to be taking with you from this OCEANOS?
The people I’ve met, definitely. I am a very shy person when it comes to meeting people. I don’t talk. I don’t like it. But here I don’t know why it was so easy. I already knew people, but I’ve met all of them. I know all of them now. They’re already talking about what we’re going to do in July. And I was like, this isn’t even over, and you’re already thinking about what we’re going to do in July? We got so close together. The only thing I didn’t like was that we got divided. The high schoolers went to La Parguera at first and the university people went to Culebra and then we switched, but I think if we would have been together all month, we would be so much closer for sure. That’s the only thing I didn’t like. But everything else I loved. I loved it.

Mi nombre es Layshaliz Rodríguez Mulero. Yo asistí al colegio Discípulos de Cristo de Texas. En la actualidad estoy asistiendo a la Universidad Interamericana y estoy en primer año de universidad.
¿Qué tema de StoryMap presentará?
Voy a estar presentando la calidad de agua y me tocó la parte de hacer gráficas de hablar sobre la temperatura, de la luz, de la reflectancia y también de la clorofila.
¿Cuáles han sido algunos aspectos destacados del programa OCEANOS?
Definitivamente la restauración de corales en Culebra que se hizo con la organización de la SAM (Sociedad Ambiente Marino) y el ver como los corales pues son bien resilientes y siguen creciendo y aunque baje la temperatura o las cosas que es toda la las posibilidades que tienen por no sobrevivir, ellos busca la manera de sobrevivir.
¿Hubo algo sorprendente para ti en este programa?
Si. Yo pensaba que las hierbas marinas eran alga y yo realmente siempre lo pensé hasta que llegué aquí. No educaron que realmente las hierbas marinas y la alga son dos cosas completamente diferentes, que tienen impacto en el océano completamente diferente. Y eso a mí me impresionó demasiado.
¿Cómo encaja esta pasantía en lo que ya estás estudiando o en lo que esperas hacer a continuación?
Pues en mi bachillerato de biomédica tenemos que tomar clases como biología, microbiología, curso así de ciencia, valga la redundancia. Definitivamente lo que he aprendido aquí me van a ayudar en esas clases, pues mencionan algo o dicen algo de los ecosistemas marinos y yo voy a decir wow, yo estuve ahí, yo estuve aprendiendo de eso, yo lo vi, yo lo toqué y además que pues sí.
¿Qué te vas a llevar de OCEANOS?
Me voy a llevar todas las amistades, que yo soy una persona bien tímida al momento de conocer personas y aquí se me hizo súper fácil. También todo lo que he aprendido, porque yo entré por decirlo así, en arroz y habichuelas, como dicen en Puerto Rico y en Cuba, y no sabía de la vida marina, le tenía miedo al agua y ahora hasta estoy considerando hacer un minor en biología, que para mí es algo como que es súper impresionante y bien gratificante.
