My name is Jerome Mercado and I just ended my high school year in CROEM (Centro Residencial de Oportunidades Educativas de Mayagüez), and now I’m heading to attend my first year in college in UPR.
Which StoryMap topic are you presenting on?
My storymap will be based on water quality, and I’ll be talking about how the quality of water can make a difference between two ecosystems.
What have been some highlights of the OCEANOS program?
My favorite part was definitely meeting people that were interested in the same career path as me. And I love going to the beaches and learning more about them. Also, an amazing experience was working with the SAM organization (Sociedad Ambiente Marino) in the coral farm because not only was I learning, but I was contributing to the planet.
Did anything surprise you in this program?
I think the thing that surprised me most was the diversity of themes. I was also surprised by the way we were totally clueless about so many problems that are currently happening in the world, and how everything somehow is connected to the ocean.
How does this internship fit into either what you’re already studying or what you’re hoping to do next?
When I start working in my career, now I have different contacts and connections for future opportunities.
What are you going to be taking with you from OCEANOS?
From OCEANOS, I’m taking away not only amazing friends, but supportive teachers and new skills and knowledge that are going to help me in college. Also fond memories and the opportunity of being the first people to experience this internship. It also helped me to be productive this summer, so I didn’t lay in bed all day.

Mi nombre es Jerome Mercado. Yo acabo de terminar High School en CROEM (Centro Residencial de Oportunidades Educativas de Mayagüez), Mayagüez y voy a estar estudiando en UPR Mayagüez. Ahora estoy en Microbiología Industrial.
¿Qué tema de StoryMap presentará?
En mi Story Map voy a estar hablando sobre la calidad de agua. Voy a estar hablando específicamente en la calidad de agua que hace la diferencia entre dos ecosistemas.
¿Cuáles han sido algunos aspectos destacados del programa OCEANOS?
Siento que mi parte favorita del internado fue conocer a gente que está interesada en las mismas cosas que yo. Y me gustó estar yendo a la playa y aprendiendo más sobre ellas. Una experiencia súper asombrosa fue trabajar con la SAM – la Sociedad Ambiente Marino – y poder plantar corales en la finca que no siento que fue algo que solamente me trajo conocimiento, sino también me gustó que aporté un granito de arena a los problemas que está teniendo el planeta ahora mismo.
¿Hubo algo sorprendente para ti en este programa?
Siento que lo que más me sorprendió fue la diversidad de temas que no solamente se habló de la biología y la vida marina, sino que también hablo de robótica, que no me gustó mucho. Lo de aprender snorkeling me gustó; ya yo sabía un poquito, pero adquirí nuevas destrezas. Me gustó también que aprendí sobre problemas que estaba pasando en el planeta, especialmente en el océano, que realmente no sabía y me gustó eso que apoyé mi granito de arena.
¿Cómo encaja esta pasantía en lo que ya estás estudiando o en lo que esperas hacer a continuación?
Lo que me gustó fue que la experiencia confirmó que lo que yo quería estudiar era lo correcto y que no voy a estar perdiendo tiempo en la universidad ni nada, sino que lo que voy a hacer ahora es lo que me gusta. Y ya antes de que eso es.
¿Qué te vas a llevar de OCEANOS?
Ahora, gracias a OCEANOS, tengo obviamente nuevas amistades que quiero. También hay dinero, pero eso no era lo que principalmente buscaba. Tengo nuevas amistades, tengo nuevas conexiones con los maestros también, que me cayeron súper bien porque me gustó que se pudo hacer relación con los maestros. No solamente hablamos de tema del internado, sino también como que sobre nosotros. Me gustó también que todo lleva algo de conocimiento y de destrezas para la universidad, ya que es un nuevo año, completamente una nueva etapa. Puedo llevar memorias muy divertidas y oportunidades de conocer a más gente luego del internado y estoy agradecido de que me ayudó también a que este verano no estuve haciendo nada, sino que hice algo productivo. No solamente estaba acostado en mi cama todo el verano.
