Experience the Reveal of the James Webb Space Telescope’s First Images

Ball Aerospace lead optical test engineer Dave Chaney inspects six primary mirror segments, critical elements of the James Webb Space Telescope, prior to cryogenic testing in the X-ray & Cryogenic Facility at Marshall Space Flight Center

You’re invited to register to attend an in-person NASA Social as we reveal the long-awaited first images from the James Webb Space Telescope. Webb, an international collaboration led by NASA with its partners the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency, is the biggest telescope ever launched into space. It will unlock mysteries in our solar system, look beyond to distant worlds around other stars, and probe the mysterious structures and origins of our universe and our place in it.

The NASA Social event will be two days, July 12 and 13, 2022.

Day 1 will include:

  • Joining us as a guest for the in-studio filming of our televised broadcast at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, where Webb’s images will be revealed for the first time
  • Interaction and Q&A with experts from the Webb mission

Day 2 will include:

  • A tour of NASA Goddard facilities, including the viewing area for the giant cleanroom where Webb’s mirrors were assembled
  • A visit to the James Webb Space Telescope Mission Operations Center in Baltimore, Maryland at the Space Telescope Science Institute

If your passion is sharing your love of space science and engaging the world via social media, then this is the event for you! Seize the opportunity to be on the front line to blog, tweet or Instagram (and more!) everything about the Webb telescope as it begins to #UnfoldtheUniverse.

Social media users selected to attend this two-day event will be given access similar to news media. (For members of the media, an advisory about media coverage opportunities will be forthcoming.)

NASA Social registration for the Webb First Images social opens on June 1st and the deadline to apply is June 7 at 3 p.m. EDT. All social applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

When will I know if I am selected?
After registrations have been received and processed, an email with confirmation information and additional instructions will be sent to those selected. We expect to send the first notifications on June 10 and waitlist notifications on June 14.

What are NASA Social credentials?
All social applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Those chosen must prove through the registration process they meet specific engagement criteria.

What are the registration requirements?
Registration indicates your intent to travel to NASA’s Goddard Space Center and the Space Telescope Science Institute in Maryland and attend the two-day event in person. You are responsible for your own expenses for travel, accommodation, food, and other amenities.

Some events and participants scheduled to appear at the event are subject to change without notice. NASA is not responsible for loss or damage incurred as a result of attending. NASA, moreover, is not responsible for loss or damage incurred if the event is canceled with limited or no notice. Please plan accordingly.

NASA Goddard and Space Telescope Science Institute have different entry requirements. Those who are selected will need to complete additional registration steps to receive clearance to these facilities. Additionally, each facility may have different requirements for COVID-19 safety. (See more below.)

By accepting an invitation to this event, the participant is agreeing to attend all portions of the event. Attendees must be checked in on time on Day 1 of the event. An agenda will be provided ahead of the event. They may communicate with event organizers in case of emergency, but lack of timeliness may otherwise forfeit their access to the event.

IMPORTANT: To be admitted, you will need to provide two forms of unexpired government-issued identification; one must be a photo ID and match the name provided on the registration. Those without proper identification cannot be admitted. For a complete list of acceptable forms of ID, please visit: https://www.nasa.gov/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/i-9_poster_acceptable_documents_2014_04_23.pdf?emrc=50f09c

All registrants must be at least 18 years old.

What if I cannot come to the Goddard Space Flight Center?
If you cannot come to the Goddard Space Flight Center and attend in person, you should not register for the NASA Social. You can follow the conversation using the #NASASocial hashtag on Twitter. You can watch the Webb First Images broadcast on NASA Television or www.nasa.gov/live. NASA will provide updates on @NASA and @NASAWebb, and there may be opportunities to further follow along online.

What are the safety protocols for this event?
Because safety precautions for COVID-19 are in flux, the protocols for this event will be communicated closer to the date of the event. Requirements for visitors may differ between NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and the Space Telescope Science Institute in regards to mask-wearing and vaccination status. All participants must comply with all safety protocols to in order attend the event.

If you cannot make this NASA Social, don’t worry; NASA is planning many other Socials in the near future at various locations! Check back on https://www.nasa.gov/social for updates.
