GRACE consists of two satellites orbiting in tandem 137 miles (220 km) apart. By measuring the distance between the two satellites precisely using GPS and a microwave ranging system, variations in the Earth’s gravitational field can be determined. These measurements are used to map changes in the Earth’s magnetic field over time.
Launch: March 2002Operating Network: Near Earth Network*
› Near Space Network (NSN)› Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment 1 & 2 (GRACE 1 & 2)› Historical Missions Supported by SCaN
* Editor’s Note: As of October 2020, the Near Earth Network and the Space Network have aggregated into the Near Space Network.
