Upward Flame Propagation (NASA Test 1)

The purpose of this test is to determine if a material, when exposed to a standard ignition source, will self-extinguish and not transfer burning debris, which can ignite adjacent materials. The test evaluates candidate material in the worst-case atmosphere to which the material could be exposed. Five test specimens are mounted vertically in a test stand with a paper sample mounted adjacent to it and tested one at a time. Each specimen is ignited at the bottom by  an ignition system and allowed to burn until each self-extinguishes.
