NASA Astronaut and Engineers to Connect with Tennessee Students

What: NASA representatives from NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., will talk with students at Mt. Juliet High School in Tennessee through a distance lecture hosted by Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville. Joining the discussion via Skype will be former astronaut Roger Crouch. After the lecture, Mt. Juliet students will demonstrate their prototype catapult system that they are building with a rapid prototyping machine.
The Marshall Center is partnering with Tennessee Tech to introduce Middle Tennessee students to the Space Launch System, or SLS, the nation’s next heavy-lift vehicle that will take astronauts farther into space than ever before.
NASA personnel visiting Tennessee Tech will broadcast three lectures to 13 schools throughout the day. Students will question the NASA engineers and have hands-on assignments at their local schools in rocket building and rocket propulsion.
When: Friday, Feb. 22, 1 p.m. – 2:15 p.m. CT
Where: Mt. Juliet High School, 1800 Curd Rd., Mt. Juliet, Tenn.
HIGHLIGHTS:
1 p.m. – Distance lecture, broadcast from Tennessee Tech, led by Marshall Center representatives John Rector, SLS Stages Element Green Run Test manager, Mallory Johnston, Flight Systems engineer, and Mike Kynard, SLS Liquid Engines Office manager.
1:45 p.m. – Mt. Juliet High School students will demonstrate a catapult launch they created on a rapid prototyping machine.
2:00 p.m. – Available in person at Mt. Juliet for media interviews will be Don Krupp, manager of the Control System Design and Analysis Branch in the Marshall Center’s Engineering Directorate, and David Haines, a Mt. Juliet High School teacher who is leading the student demonstrations and on-site activities.
Dr. Roger Crouch, TTU alumnus and payload specialist, Columbia STS-83 and STS-94, will be available for comment via remote web connection.
