Chandra Discovery Paper

The Astrophysical Journal published online “Discovery of Kiloparsec-Scale Semirelativistic Fe Kα Complex Emission in NGC 5728” by Anna Trindade-Falcaõ et al.  This paper investigates kpc-scale emission consistent with highly redshifted Fe Kα, which suggests outflows from supermassive black holes may retain enough power to shape their host galaxies. It is the second such Chandra paper by Dr. W. Peter Maksym (Astrophysics Branch) and his collaborators. Read the paper at: https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/1538-4357/ad18b3.

Maksym was recognized for contributing to JWST Cycle 3 peer review as an external reviewer.  This was his second such JWST peer review.

Chandra ACIS-S image of the 0.3–8 keV X-ray emission in NGC 5728 at 1/8 pixel. The conical regions are the extraction regions used in the spectral fitting analysis, with inner and outer radii of 1farcs5 and 8”, corresponding to ∼300 and 1600 pc at this redshift. The off-nuclear point sources removed from the spatial and spectral analysis are also shown. The color scale is in units of counts per unit pixel. The image is adaptively smoothed.
