NASA Joins Structures to Form Top of Space Launch System Core Stage
Engineers at NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans have completed the “forward join,” connecting structures to form the top part of NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket’s core stage. The forward join mated three structures: the forward skirt, the liquid oxygen tank and the intertank. This marks the beginning of integration and assembly of the core stage.
Refabricator to Recycle, Reuse Plastic Installed on Space Station
The first integrated recycler and 3D printer was successfully installed onboard the International Space Station into the station’s experiment racks. This technology demonstration, called a Refabricator, will turn plastic materials of various sizes and shapes into feedstock used to 3D print items.
GOES East ‘Sees’ Meteor Flash in Western Cuba
On Feb. 1, a large meteor event was observed over western Cuba during daylight hours. NASA’s Short-term Prediction Research and Transition team examined data and imagry received from the GOES East Geostationary Lightning Mapper through the GOES-R Ground Receiving Station at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, and were able to confirm the presence of a meteor.
Chandra Searches for the Universe’s Missing Mass
Astronomers have spent decades looking for something that sounds like it would be hard to miss: about a third of the “normal” matter in the universe. New results from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory may have helped them locate this elusive expanse of missing matter.
