Gardens and Red Planet Soil: Meet Maker Diane Linne

Diane Linne stands in a lab adjusting equipment she uses to advance in-situ resource utilization technology at NASA Glenn
NASA Glenn engineer Diane Linne has designed a mining device that will help extract water from the Martian soil.

Where do you get your best ideas?  In the shower or in the car on the way to work?  NASA Glenn engineer Diane Linne gets hers in the vegetable garden.  She and her colleagues have been working on ways to harvest soil on Mars to extract water to drink and make fuel for astronauts one day.  When she was rototilling her garden, she realized that a device that scoops up the soil is a great way to start the process.

Meet the Makers

NASA has a history of advancing science and exploration because our engineers, scientists and technologists find new solutions to meet mission goals. These “makers” take a hands-on approach to move research forward by thinking outside the box. Learn about other innovators at NASA Glenn.
