Finney County in southwestern Kansas is now irrigated cropland where once there was shortgrass prairie. Common crops are corn, wheat and sorghum. Green areas in the image are healthy vegetation. Light colored cultivated fields are fallow or recently harvested. The image shows center-pivot irrigation systems that are 800 and 1,600 meters in diameter (0.5 and 1 mile). This area utilizes irrigation water from the Ogallala aquifer, that underlies an area from Wyoming to Texas. The image was acquired on June 24, 2001, is centered near 37.4 degrees north latitude, 100.9 degrees west longitude, and covers an area of 37.2 x 38.8 km.Image Credit:NASA/GSFC/METI/Japan Space Systems, and U.S./Japan ASTER Science Team
