Girls in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) is an on-site event for middle school female students in 6th-8th grade who participate in summer camps or other out-of-school summer groups and organizations.

This daylong event includes a career showcase, a female panel of scientists and engineers, an engineering design challenge and facility tours to encourage girls to pursue careers in STEM.

Media interested in covering the event should contact Jeannette Owens no later than 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 13, to be cleared through security. For inquiries or to request high-resolution images, email jeannette.p.owens@nasa.gov or call 216-433-2990.

“It is critical that the nation as a whole attract more girls to STEM professions,” said Robert LaSalvia, chief of Glenn’s Office of Education. “To facilitate change, NASA is opening its doors to introduce space, aeronautics and technology careers to girls at an early age.”

Girls attending the event are from the Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio; National Congress of Black Women, Bedford Heights; 4-H Youth Development, Ohio State University Extension, Cuyahoga County; Edwards Middle School, Brunswick; Famico’s Foundation (Get-Out Network), Cleveland and Columbus; Strengthening Our Students, East Cleveland; and Northeast Ohio Summer Science Girls, Twinsburg, Ohio.
