The image shows Mulanje Massif in southern Malawi. The Mulanje Massif rises sharply from the surrounding plains of Chiradzulu, and the tea-growing Mulanje district. Most Malawians rely on subsistence farming, but the food supply situation is precarious and the country is prone to natural disasters of both extremes – from drought to heavy rainfall.

ISERV acquired images of portions of Malawi (Africa) that are being studied for changes in land use and subsistence agriculture. Residents of the villages adjacent to the mountainous region shown in this image are changing their land use patterns in response to changing climate and the demands of increased population.
