The Intelligent Payload Experiment (IPEX) developed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California is a mission to validate various Intelligent Payload Module (IPM) technologies including autonomous onboard instrument processing, downlink operations, and
automated ground operations. IPM capability is currently baselined for the proposed HyspIRI Decadal Survey mission that will study the world’s ecosystems. Launched by NASA’s CubeSat Launch Initiative on the ELaNa II mission as an auxiliary payload aboard the NROL-39 Mission on December 6, 2013.
