Bushfires in Shoalwater Queensland, Australia

Bushfires in Queensland Australia
MODIS image shows several hot spots with smoke billowing from fires in Queensland, Australia.

The Rural Fire Service website in Queensland, Australia only reports one vegetation fire as of today’s reporting, however, there is a disconnect between that report and what the MODIS instrument on the Aqua satellite saw when this image was taken on June 05, 2015. Several bushfires can be seen in this image with smoke billowing from the hot spots. It is possible that the fires were extinguished after this image was taken, however, the Sentinel national bushfire monitoring system website is also reporting dozens of hotspots in the area today most of which are 48-72 hours old.

This natural-color satellite image was collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Aqua satellite on June 05, 2015. Actively burning areas, detected by MODIS’s thermal bands, are outlined in red. NASA image courtesy Jeff Schmaltz, MODIS Rapid Response Team. Caption: NASA/Goddard, Lynn Jenner
