NOAA/NASA’s Suomi NPP satellite captured this image of the smoke and fires in the Siberian area of Russia near Lake Baikal on September 19, 2016 at 0650 UTC. In this image the fires are located to the northwest of the Lake Baikal region of Russia in Siberia. Lake Baikal is an ancient, massive lake in the mountainous Russian region of Siberia, north of the Mongolian border. Smoke rises and mixes with the swirling clouds over the area making spirals of brown and grey clouds giving the landscape an eerie look. Dozens of wildfires continue to ravage this area of eastern Russia with no end in sight.

NASA’s Suomi NPP satellite collected this natural-color image using the VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) instrument. Actively burning areas, detected by MODIS’s thermal bands, are outlined in red. NASA image courtesy Jeff Schmaltz LANCE/EOSDIS MODIS Rapid Response Team, GSFC. Caption by Lynn Jenner
