Central Russia continues to be plagued with wildfires as evidenced by this image collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Aqua satellite on July 24, 2016. Smoke billows from the multitudes of fires and is fringed all around by voluminous clouds. In the image the red areas indicate hotspots where the point of the spot is a higher temperature than the area around it. When accompanied by plumes of smoke, as in this image, such hot spots are diagnostic for fire.
