A minor geomagnetic storm was already in progress on Feb. 19, 2014, when a coronal mass ejection, or CME, struck Earth’s magnetic field. The CME impact revved-up the storm, producing brilliant aurora over both poles, which spilled into the northern tier states of the U.S.

This aurora image was taken by Shawn Malone on February 19, 2014 at Sand River, over Lake Superior, Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
Shawn stated “[He] watched some beautiful auroras [early] this morning, very active arc with occasional pillars and colors!”
